Hi, I’m Kevin B. Smith, a behavioural neuroscientist and professor with a genuine passion for teaching and mentorship. I originally got my start at the University of the Fraser Valley, but I have since moved on to a wonderful career at Douglas College. Throughout my time at these institutions, I have regularly taught courses in Biopsychology, Evolutionary Psychology, Research Methods, Statistics, and the History and Philosophy of Psychology. My goal in the classroom is always to help students move beyond simple memorization to build a deep conceptual understanding and practical skills they can carry forward into research, graduate school, or their future careers.
My research follows a biopsychosocial perspective, specifically taking a "top-down" approach. I am interested in how the biological brain shapes the human experience, and how the environment loops back to reshape the brain itself. While my projects might appear highly variable on the surface, they are all looking at the same thing: the intersection of puberty, stress, and hormones.
When I’m not in the classroom or digging into data, I’m usually focused on staying active or working with my hands. I’m a regular Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner and have a high affinity for "DIY" projects. When it's time to reset, I head outdoors to take advantage of the BC landscape through hiking and biking. Whenever we get that all-too-frequent BC rain, I enjoy making or playing music on guitar, drums, or bass!
